Meet the Committee (2018 – 2019)

meet

While there have been shifts and changes in the committee line up, this is who we are for now….

Luke Nolan – President

About You:

Hello. I’m Luke, your friendly neighbourhood university comedy society president. Being President isn’t actually too complicated. I basically have to make sure all the other members of the committee are doing their jobs and, oh boy, do I raise hell if they’re not. Other than that, I shall be leading writing workshops throughout the semester where we do a hefty variety of activities all aimed to hone our member’s comedic writing abilities. I’m currently studying my second degree after only being at university two years! Yes, I’m just that clever. No, I didn’t fail my first year of Medicine then transfer to a Chemistry degree. I’ve got no hobbies other than comedy, so when you see me perform an unrehearsed, poorly-thought-out, humiliating routine or sketch show, just bear in mind that I really do have no excuse.

Why Did You Join:

I joined because I love comedy and when I discovered a place with people who are just as passionate about it as I am, it was a no brainer. Having a place where I can discuss, write and perform comedy with lots of lovely like-minded people has definitely been the best part of my university experience and something I’ll remember for a long time to come. I also joined because I’m going to to be a famous stand-up comedian, sell out the O2 and rake in that phat dolla.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

Wizards of Waverly Place.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

19:34:52

Samuel Wicks – Secretary & Tech Officer

About You:

My name is Sam (see above) and as you can see, I have not one but two! YES TWO! Committee roles (see above again). If you ignore both Jess and Saquib then I have more jobs than anybody else on the committee, which gives me immense power. Being both secretary AND tech officer means that I can both write, send and respond to emails (which is very important), and I get to make videos and podcasts! How cool is that? Also, if you ignore Luke then I’m the most powerful committee member, so I basically run the society. Plus, if you ignore all the other committee members (Gus, Kate and Owen) then I’m the only committee member, so I basically am the society. Neat, isn’t it? Of course, being a society isn’t easy, but I like a good challenge (as long as it’s not too difficult).

What’s that? You’re not going to ignore the other committee members? Oho. But that means that I’m just a man with two jobs, and that isn’t as cool as being a society….

Why Did You Join:

Nowhere else would take me. Well… they would, but it’s more dramatic this way. Got to come up with a tragic backstory somehow.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

I’m really not too fussed when it comes to comedy, although if I had to choose (which I do, strangely enough) I’d say that Chris Morris is my favourite comedian (check out Brass Eye on YouTube for a good giggle). Also, Tim Vine gets an honourable mention; as cheesy as his jokes are, they’re well thought out.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

Any time that involves food. Although that could be any time for anyone; and then depends on what kind of meal you’re having. Sure, 10.00am is perfect for a full english breakfast, but not for brunch! Brunch must be served at 11.00am, which is far too early for any kind of lunch (12 noon if you’re having a sandwich, 1.30pm if it’s something more substantial). And don’t get me started on dinner, which is already a mess without throwing tea or dessert into the mix! 6.00pm? 8.00pm? 11.00pm? Who even knows anymore? Not me, that’s for sure. In which case, the best time must surely be the present (as cheesy as it is): I can’t enjoy a meal I’ve already eaten, and I can’t enjoy a meal I’m going to eat; but I can definitely enjoy the one I’m eating now.

Jessica Sturgeon – Treasurer

About You:

I’m Jessica and my roles are treasurer, meaning I count the money. I like baking cookies for workshops and writing awkwardly short about mes.

Why Did You Join:

I went to a Give It A Go on a whim and kept coming because I love geeking out about comedy with people.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

Kids in the Hall, Stella, Mr Show, Comedy Bang! Bang!, Delocated, The Thick of It, 30 Rock, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Yes Minister, Peep Show, Mystery Science Theater 3000, Limmy’s Show, Arrested Development, Paul F. Tompkins, Eugene Mirman, Maria Bamford, John Mulaney, Erlend & Steinjo, The Good Place

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

🤷🏻‍♀️

Saquib Idrees – Inclusions Officer

About You:

Sup, I’m Saquib and I am your Inclusions Officer. This means that I am here to make sure everyone feels safe and comfortable within the society and my doors are always open (literally). But I am more than just your  Inclusions Officer, I am also a masters student studying Culture Heritage Management (hopefully, it’d be really sad if I wrote this here and then failed my degree and now you all pity me)

Why Did You Join:

My housemate in second year joined, loved it, dragged me along and then I loved it and I’m still here 2 years later.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

In terms of stand up, I don’t have many specific favourite comedians, but my favourite style of comedy is any set based on real life events. But with regard to T.V and movies, I really love wacky stuff and sitcoms; my favourites include The Office (US), Parks & Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

NIGHT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kate Lockyear – Publicity Officer

About You:

Hi, I’m Kate and I’m the Revue’s Publicity Officer. So basically I’ll shamelessly plug the society wherever I go. It’s my job to make Facebook events for our shows and ensure as many people as possible know how great we are! See, I’m very good at it, aren’t I. You’ll most likely also see me struggling to assemble our fancy roller banner at shows- I’m just not tall enough, okay!

I’ve just graduated after having studied Modern Languages (Spanish, German and French- ooooo how clever am I!) so I’m obviously very cultured. Sam has told me to write what I do here but I can’t really answer that anymore because I’m just staying in Sheffield, void of a life plan. Exciting times! I’ll be fine, I’ll be fine…I’ve just got to keep on telling myself that and it’ll come true, right?

Why Did You Join:

I didn’t join the Revue until my final year! I was a bit of a recluse when I first came to Sheffield, to be honest. Upon returning to Sheffield after my year abroad, I was determined to join a society. I’ve always liked comedy so I took myself along to the Give it a Go session and then just kept turning up really.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

I’d say my favourite sitcoms are The Thick of It (Joanna Scanlan is an absolute dream), Peep Show and I’m Alan Partridge. The IT Crowd is up there as well; seeing that for the first time caused me to binge-watch a load of comedy programmes. I also enjoy watching surreal sketch shows like Big Train.

In terms of stand up, I am unhealthily obsessed with James Acaster. He’s amazing. His stand up is incredible and unlike any style I’ve seen before, and please check out his Classic Scrapes podcasts! I’m not James Acaster’s Publicity Officer, unfortunately. Other comedians I like include Sara Pascoe, Lou Sanders, Jon Richardson, Josie Long and Joe Lycett.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

6-8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays, when I’m at a Revue workshop with all my dudes…I’m so darn good at this job, I feel sorry for the next Publicity Officer, big shoes to fill, big shoes indeed.

And on all the other days, I believe that time isn’t real.

Owen Jones – Social Secretary

About You:

Oh, you’re actually reading this? Bloody hell, you really have nothing better to do with your time, do you? Anyway, my name is Owen Jones, however I don’t write for The Guardian, nor am I Welsh, despite the rather unfortunate name my parents cursed me with. I bet they found that pretty funny at the time, but I assure you that it’s not.

I am the Social Sec and I won with a landslide majority, because nobody else wanted the job! But seriously, my job is to make sure you members have a great, fulfilling social experience with the Revue, which is more than could be said about my own social life. I’ll be organising great activities for members, from days out to see comedians to nights out to the pub, I’ll make sure that our socials will be inclusive, safe, and most importantly, fun. Well, actually safety is probably the most important thing, but you get the point.

Why Did You Join:

Comedy and writing have been interests of mine for many years prior to joining the Revue, so when I found out about its existence, it just made sense to join up!

Plus, I needed to find somewhere to laugh the pain away, so it was win-win really.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

For favourite comedies, I’d have to say Peep Show, Blackadder (Especially ‘Goes Forth’), The Thick of It, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, and I’m Alan Partridge. There are plenty of clips to find on YouTube and all of them are available on Netflix, so do check those out if you haven’t already!

Comedians like David Mitchell, Robert Webb, Stephen Fry, Armando Iannucci, Steve Coogan, Rowan Atkinson, and John Cleese are certainly favourites, and have been a huge inspiration for my writing and have shaped my bizarre sense of humour into what it is today.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

My favourite time of day is that critical point somewhere between 6:32pm and 6:36pm when you make that crucial decision of whether you should have a cup of tea or if it’s too late in the day to have any form of caffeine, lest you be lying in bed unable to sleep until 4:25am. I always pick the former and hate myself afterwards.

Angus Ross – Venues Manager & Artistic Director

About You:

The name’s Gus, An-Gus. That’s it, the only bit I’m doing for this year’s meet the committee.

I’m a 3rd-year biologist with an interest in bugs. Lot of people in my field are here cus they want to save the world, I’d be satisfied with just seeing it, and so spend my free time travelling. I’ll be the last to leave the post workshop pub trips and will happily talk away the night there. Which brings me to my current role: Venues. Besides some boring behind the scenes management type stuff, the main bit of the role you’ll see me in will be hanging around the bar trying to hand our business card over to the manager, which also happens to be my perfect Sunday.

Why Did You Join:

The Revue is a group of people united by their enjoyment of comedy. They’re a relaxed, easy-going group of people who like a laugh. What’s not to like?

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

I was brought up on dad jokes. And the people making those dad jokes stole them from classic 70s comedy like Morecambe and Wise. For all the clever political commentary on our stages and screens these days, comedy for me has always been about entertainment first and foremost. These guys had a real stage presence and lovable charm that could make even the daftest material entertaining.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

The part of the day when I see your smile.

Ethan James Davies – Artistic Director

About You:

Ethan James Davies. Spy. Sailor. Sandbag on the floor of Destiny. I’m the only member here who knows what a juggler looks like. I’m Co-AD with Angus Ross, above, and I got this role halfway through the year. To explain a bit about the Revue and how it’s run: I was added into this document before any other official Committee groups, chats or pages. Priorities. Anyway, AD means I’m in charge of you. Within and outside of workshops, shows, gardens and buses. Specifically, I’m responsible for Thursday workshops, the sketch side of things and B.E.P. Don’t ask what B.E.P. means. I’ll tell you when you’re older.

Why Did You Join:

I came to this university because of its Comedy Society. If I didn’t then join, I’d be a right idiot. Like a virgin or a parent or something whack.

Favourite Comedies/Comedians:

Dylan Moran, Doug Stanhope, Andy Kaufman, Sarah Silverman, Frankie Boyle, Bill Hicks, Richard Pryor, Rik Mayall, Spike Milligan, Vic and Bob, Josie Long, Bec Hill, Monty Python, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, Jerry Seinfeld, Tina Fey, Stewart Lee, Voltaire, Anonymous, Zoe Tomalin, Tom Burgess, Sam Nicoresti, Sian Docksey, Sean Morley, Charlotte Perry, Shem Jeffs, Phil Oke, Luke Nolan, Samuel Wicks, Jessica Sturgeon, Saquib Idrees, Kate Lockyear, Owen Jones, Angus Ross, Ethan James Davies, Etc.

4th Question: This year’s question is: what’s your favourite time of day?

  1. 1 cup cooking oil.
  2. 16 corn tortillas.
  3. 1 (28-ounce) can enchilada sauce.
  4. 2 cups cheese (such as mozzarella or queso blanco, grated or shredded).
  5. 1/2 cup Cotija cheese.
  6. Optional: 1 1/2 cups cooked shredded louse.
